For Dietitians ·
What you'll accomplish
A complete 7-day therapeutic meal plan, including shopping list, carb counts, and culturally adapted options, in 10-15 minutes instead of 45-60. This guide builds that system and leaves you with condition-specific templates ready for your most common patient types.
What you'll need
Go to chatgpt.com and click New chat in the left sidebar. You'll see a text input box at the bottom of the screen.
What you should see: A clean conversation interface with the model selector at the top. For meal plan generation, the default model works well.
Providing context at the start of a conversation significantly improves the quality of every meal plan you generate in that session:
I'm a registered dietitian generating initial meal plan drafts for patients.
I'll provide the diet type, calorie target, restrictions, and patient preferences.
Always:
- Include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 1-2 snacks per day
- List estimated carbohydrates per meal (for diabetic plans) or key restricted nutrients (for renal, cardiac plans)
- Keep portions realistic and meals simple enough for a home cook
- Label any modifications needed for texture-modified diets if I mention that
- End with a 7-day shopping list grouped by store section
With context established, provide the patient parameters:
Create a 7-day meal plan for:
- Diet type: [e.g. 1800-calorie ADA-consistent diabetic]
- Restrictions: [e.g. <45g carbs per meal, <2000mg sodium]
- Food preferences: [e.g. enjoys Mexican and Italian food, eats meat, no shellfish]
- Cooking skill: [e.g. basic — uses microwave and stovetop, 30 min max per meal]
- Budget: [e.g. $75/week, or leave blank for no budget constraint]
What you should see: A structured 7-day plan appearing within 20-30 seconds, with each day laid out in a consistent format.
Read through every day critically:
Once you've reviewed, refine with specific follow-up prompts:
Copy the final meal plan into a Word or Google Doc template. Add your clinic logo, patient name, and personalized notes. Print or share via your patient portal.

Preferences: [cuisine, dislikes, cooking skill]. Flag any high-K or high-phos items I should review.
Cardiac/low-sodium meal plan:
Create a 7-day cardiac meal plan. Sodium target: [1500/2000]mg/day.
Also limit: saturated fat <[g]/day, dietary cholesterol <[mg]/day.
Preferences: [cuisine, dislikes]. Cooking skill: [level].
Include: sodium content per meal, label "heart-healthy" swaps vs. original recipe.
Budget-constrained plan (food insecurity):
Create a 7-day [diet type] meal plan with a $[amount] budget.
Use: SNAP-eligible items, canned and frozen vegetables are fine,
whole grains, eggs, canned fish, legumes for affordable protein.
Stores available: [Walmart/Aldi/food bank items].
Include a shopping list with estimated costs totaling under $[amount].
Texture-modified plan (dysphagia):

Calorie target: [kcal]. Restrictions: [any additional diet restrictions].
Ensure all items meet IDDSI [level] standards. Note any items that require modification
and how to achieve the right texture (blending, pureeing, thickening).
